At PDX Bernedoodles, the health and well-being of our dogs is our top priority. All of our dogs are fed a high-quality, nutrient-rich diet, supplemented with essential vitamins to support their immune system and overall vitality. They receive regular veterinary care throughout the year, including wellness checks and preventative screenings, to ensure they remain strong, healthy, and happy.
We are committed to ethical breeding practices and limit our program to one litter per female per year. When a dam enters her heat cycle, we closely monitor her progesterone levels through Newberg Veterinary Hospital to determine the optimal timing for breeding.
When the time is right, we use side-by-side insemination, which not only reduces physical stress for the female but also allows us to safely pair her with a much smaller male — a decision made for both comfort and practicality.
As soon as pregnancy is confirmed, we begin enhanced prenatal care, including supplementation with high-quality fish oil and prenatal vitamins. At the one-month mark, we perform an ultrasound to confirm pregnancy. During the second month, we transition the expectant mom to a high-protein, well-balanced diet to support fetal development and maintain her health.
Canine gestation lasts approximately 63 days. One week before the expected due date, we take the dam for a radiograph (x-ray) to get an accurate puppy count and prepare for a smooth delivery.
Approximately two weeks before the expected due date, we introduce the expectant mother to her designated whelping area, allowing her time to acclimate and begin nesting naturally by arranging blankets and creating a comfortable space. Approximately two weeks before the expected due date, we introduce the expectant mother to her designated whelping area, allowing her time to acclimate and begin nesting naturally by arranging blankets and creating a comfortable space. During the final week of pregnancy, we begin daily temperature monitoring, as a noticeable drop often signals the onset of labor.
Once active labor begins, we ensure the environment is calm, quiet, and stress-free. While we are fully prepared to assist if necessary, we prioritize letting the mother take the lead in her delivery process. In the event of any complications, our trusted veterinarian is always on call and ready to assist.
Following the birth, we closely monitor each puppy’s weight and nursing behavior to confirm healthy growth and development. For the first two weeks postpartum, I sleep in the same room as the mother and her litter to provide round-the-clock support and ensure the puppies are safe, warm, and thriving.
During this critical period, the mother is fed a high-fat, high-protein diet and continues with a regimen of prenatal and postnatal supplements, including zinc complex and liver and kidney support, to promote optimal milk production and recovery.
Two weeks before the puppies are born, we transition the mother and her whelping box into our main living area. This allows the puppies to gradually acclimate to the sounds and rhythms of everyday family life while still remaining in the safe and secure environment of their whelping box for the first two weeks after birth.

Two weeks before the puppies are born, we transition the mother and her whelping box into our main living area. This allows the puppies to gradually acclimate to the sounds and rhythms of everyday family life while still remaining in the safe and secure environment of their whelping box for the first two weeks after birth.
We continue to monitor each puppy’s weight daily, supplementing with puppy formula if needed to ensure every pup is thriving. During this early stage, the puppies are gently handled multiple times a day by our immediate family, promoting early socialization. We delay outside visitors to minimize exposure to outside germs and to protect their developing immune systems. Once their immunity strengthens, we welcome waiting families to visit and meet the puppies in person to begin the selection process.
Potty training begins around three weeks of age, along with early introduction to sleeping through the night. At approximately four weeks, we begin transitioning the puppies to solid food, starting with puppy formula in shallow bowls, followed by a blended mush (puppy food mixed with formula), and eventually dry kibble once their teeth have come in.
The puppies have access to a large indoor playpen and a spacious outdoor deck, giving them ample room to run, explore, and play. (We hold off on allowing access to grassy areas until they’ve received their first vaccinations.) Cleanliness is a top priority — we maintain a very clean environment in all puppy areas to reduce any risk of illness or infection.
Before the puppies transition to their forever homes, they undergo two veterinary visits and receive all age-appropriate vaccinations by eight weeks of age. By this time, each puppy is healthy, well-socialized, and accustomed to the everyday sounds and activities of a household.

We love and care for our puppies as if they were our own, and we never compromise on their health, well-being, or early development. We strongly encourage early connection between families and their puppies, and we are always happy to welcome visits to foster these important bonds.
Prior to the puppies’ departure, we conduct a photoshoot and share these special moments with the families. Each puppy goes home with a thoughtfully prepared care package and a blanket scented with their mother’s scent to provide comfort during the early transition period.
We remain available for ongoing support and questions, and we offer exclusive dog sitting services for our puppies to ensure continued care and peace of mind for our families.
PDX Bernedoodles is looking for responsible, loving families to join our Guardian Home Program! This is a special opportunity to raise one of our high-quality female Bernedoodles in your home, while partnering with us in our mission to breed healthy, well-tempered, and beautiful dogs.
As a Guardian, you’ll receive a pick-of-the-litter Bernedoodle at no upfront cost. She will live with you full-time as your beloved pet, while we retain breeding rights for a limited number of litters. Once her breeding career is complete (typically 4 litters), she will be spayed and fully signed over to you for life — at no additional cost.
We cover all breeding-related expenses, including health testing, reproductive care, and whelping. You provide a safe, stable, and loving home and help us maintain her health and socialization.
If you’ve been dreaming of adding a special dog to your family and want to help us raise incredible puppies with health, structure, and temperament at the heart of our program, we’d love to talk to you.
If you are unable to pick up in Oregon, we also offer transportation either by plane or car for a small fee. We do not allow our precious puppies to be put on a plane by themself.

We are a family of five — mom, dad, and three children — originally from Denmark. We relocated to the United States 15 years ago due to my husband’s career and have since made our home on a small urban farm in Portland, Oregon. Our household includes four beloved dogs: two miniature long-haired Dachshunds, Karla and Larsen, and two Bernese Mountain Dogs, Betty and Dolly. We also care for a flock of chickens and six ducks — all named, though we’ll spare you the full roster! Simply put, animals are a central part of our lives, and we cherish every one of them.
I’m an interior designer by profession, and becoming a Bernedoodle breeder was never something I planned. While I’ve enjoyed hatching chicks and ducklings as a hobby — a process I find deeply rewarding — breeding puppies was never on my radar.
That changed when we brought Dolly into our family. Shortly after adopting her, we learned she had given birth to a litter of Bernedoodle puppies just ten days before — pups that were taken from her within days of being born. It was heartbreaking to witness her grief. Despite our best efforts to comfort and care for her, Dolly was visibly sad and emotionally withdrawn.
One evening, while snuggling with her and speaking softly about her puppies, it became clear to me: Dolly needed a second chance at motherhood — a chance to nurture her pups the way she hadn’t been allowed the first time. I consulted with her amazing veterinarian, who supported the idea and helped guide us through the process with care and compassion.
When I commit to something, I pour myself into it completely. I immersed myself in learning everything I could about responsible breeding, connected with experienced mentors, and maintained close communication with our vet. We patiently waited for Dolly’s next heat cycle, and when the time came, she was inseminated with an incredibly sweet and charming stud named Winston — and just like that, PDX Bernedoodles was born.
The change in Dolly was remarkable. As soon as she was pregnant, her mood lifted. Her playfulness returned, she engaged more with us and the other dogs, and her tail wagged joyfully — it was like a light switched back on inside her. When she went into labor, she handled the experience with grace and instinct, delivering five healthy, beautiful mini Bernedoodles. I was there every step of the way, ready to step in if needed, but she exceeded all expectations. Watching her nurture her puppies with love and pride was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.
Of course, we couldn’t keep all the puppies, but for Dolly’s first litter, we promised our adoptive families that Dolly would tell us when she was ready to let them go — and she did. When the time came, she gently began distancing herself from the litter, letting us know she was ready. She had fulfilled her maternal purpose and experienced motherhood the way she was meant to — fully, naturally, and lovingly.
Her transformation affirmed something powerful: this was her calling — and, by extension, ours.
